The Friends of the Big Bear Alpine Zoo invite photographers to enter the 2022 Calendar Contest. Entries will be judged on technical quality, originality, and artistic merit. You may enter a TOTAL of ten (10) images for your entry fee of $20. The contest judges’ decision will be final.

All photo contestants will receive one (1) free copy of the 2023 calendar. Additional calendars may be purchased at the Big Bear Alpine Zoo gift shop. Judges will select one photo as the Grand Prize Winner. That winner will receive a canvas print of his/her photo, and will receive a one (1)-year individual membership to the Big Bear Alpine Zoo.

The Big Bear Alpine Zoo will open early 9 am on June 18th and June 24th to registered contestants. Throughout the day, animals will be presented by Zoo Staff. Regular zoo admission fees will apply.

Each submission MUST follow these guidelines:

1) Photos must be taken at the Big Bear Alpine Zoo between June 18th and 24th. Photos may include animals, people (see *NOTE), and/or Big Bear Alpine Zoo scenes. *NOTE: All photographs submitted to the Contest which contain persons (especially children 18 years of age or younger), except for Zoo Staff, must include a Model Release signed by that person (or guardian) in the photo. Please use the attached Model Release form if you don’t already have one.

2) Cameras may be traditional cameras or Smart Phones. The four Photography Categories in which a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd-place winner will be selected are:

·Professional—May have won previous contests; may earn a living as a photographer

·Intermediate—Some experience, but not a professional

·Amateur—Little or no experience in photography

·Youth—Under 18 years of age.

3) Digital images should be taken with the camera set for highest possible resolution. Photographs MUST be submitted to Friends of the Big Bear Alpine Zoo (P.O. Box 1988, Big Bear Lake, CA 92315) by mail on an External thumb drive or Flash disk. All files MUST be clearly labeled with your full name, address, phone number, and submission category and photograph number. Please ensure entries arrive on or before deadline date of July 15th 2022.

EXAMPLE: Amateur—JohnDoe—1.jpg; and Amateur—JohnDoe—2.jpg

4) You may make minor adjustments to your photo, including sharpening, contrast, toning, slight color adjustment, and conver-sion to grayscale. The addition and/or subtraction of objects and/or people is not permitted. If the judges determine a photo-graph has been altered, the judges reserve the right to disqualify said photograph.

6) Please make sure that all photos should be high resolution greater than 2MB in size, 50MB max, in JPG format only!

5) Do not place watermarks on any image, or alter any of the metadata embedded in the image.

7) Please be sure ALL forms and photographs are submitted by July 15th 2022.

The Friends of the Big Bear Alpine Zoo Photography Competition is open to all photographers, except employees of the Big Bear Alpine Zoo.

Photographer’s Release

I grant permission to Friends of the Big Bear Alpine Zoo (FOBBAZ) to non-exclusive, unlimited use of photographs taken by me for any and all print, electronic, digital and other media now or hereafter known, for distribution, advertisement, publication, and promotion in connection with Friends of the Big Bear Alpine Zoo’s association services including use on Friends of the Big Bear Alpine Zoo’s website, publications, promotional materials and advertisements for the same, and on FOBBAZ’s website or other websites that ad-vertise, promote or offer Friends of the Big Bear Alpine Zoo's or Big Bear Alpine Zoo’s services. I request that, if possible, photo credit be given to me in exchange for said use. My signature below releases Friends of the Big Bear Alpine Zoo from any copyright infringe-ment as a result of use of my photographs.

I hereby waive any right to inspect or approve the photographs or electronic matter that may be used in conjunction with them now or in the future, whether that use is known to me or unknown, and I waive any right to royalties or other compensation arising from or related to the use of the photographs.

I hereby agree to release and hold harmless Friends of the Big Bear Alpine Zoo from and against any claims, damages or liability aris-ing from or related to the use of the photographs, including but not limited to any re-use, distortion, blurring, alteration, optical illusion or use in composite form, either intentionally or otherwise, that may occur or be produced in production of the finished product.

The specific photos referred to and released by this release are photos submitted in the 2021 Friends of the Big Bear Alpine Zoo pho-tography contest.

Hints & Tips

Here are a few Hints and Tips to allow you and the animals to have a happy day:

“There are no photographic rules, just good photographs” … Ansel Adams

1. Please don’t cross any barriers to get closer to enclosure/animals

2. Please don’t use anything to attract the animal’s attention (food, noises, lights, laser)

3. Wait for it…. Patience will pay off

4. Be familiar with your camera:

5. Bring extra memory cards and batteries

6. Offer assistance if a fellow contester needs help with their camera

7. Share creative ideas with others

8. Be sure to ask permission if a non-zoo person will be in your photo (obtain & sign model release form)

9. Scope out the whole area early and plan your path

10. Think “calendar image,” not just a snap-shot

11. Think “composition”

12. Focus on the animal’s eyes

13. Without violating Zoo rules, get as close as allowable to the enclosure fence

14. Reptile room…..NO FLASH PLEASE… hold steady/brace camera

15. Know where the sun is… use it rather than cuss at it…

16. Avoid flash when possible… it spooks the creatures

17. Wait for the animal to do something

18. Yawn, stretch, look at you, stalk something, peek out from behind

19. Avoid the following situations if possible:

20. Avoid direct sunlight on the chain link enclosure… make a shadow if necessary.

21. Wait for the animal to move farther from the fence (might help make the fence disappear)

22. Best: you are close to fence, animal is far from fence

23. Taking photo through viewing glass:

24. Get as close to the glass as possible and cup your hands around the lens

Use a rubber lens hood if possible and put the rubber part against the glass
